A Heartfelt Journey

Reuniting with My Vietnam War Buddy

At Hookin’ Veterans, we recently had the immense privilege of witnessing a reunion that truly captures the heart of what our organization stands for—bringing together veterans whose bonds have withstood the test of time. We hope this story resonates with you as deeply as it did with us.

It’s a story of camaraderie, brotherhood, and the kind of connection that only those who have served together can understand. After more than five decades apart, Vietnam War veterans Larry Nord, Terry Larkin, and Gary Haile reunited, thanks to the efforts of Hookin’ Veterans. Their journey from war buddies to lifelong friends is one of honor, sacrifice, and the enduring power of military friendships.

After decades of separation, we had the immense privilege of reconnecting with our Vietnam War buddies and shipmates, Larry and Terry. We served together aboard the USS Ticonderoga, the same ship that picked up the Apollo 17 mission and tracked enemy submarines using CV14 buoys. Those two years were among the proudest moments of our lives. However, once we were discharged, life pulled us in different directions, and we lost touch.”
– Gary

For Gary, Larry, and Terry, the reunion was nothing short of emotional. After 52 long years, seeing the faces of their brothers-in-arms instantly transported them back to their days aboard the USS Ticonderoga. The shared memories and unspoken bond between them reignited, reminding them of the strength of their connection—one that time had never diminished.

But the magic didn’t stop at their reunion. Surrounded by fellow veterans, both new and old, they were welcomed into the larger family that is Hookin’ Veterans. A family bound not only by service but by an unwavering commitment to support one another. In that moment, they felt honored to be in the presence of real-life heroes who have served in conflicts across generations. The courage, resilience, and patriotism of their fellow veterans stood as a testament to the enduring spirit of those who have served.

“Meeting up with Gary and Terry after five decades reignited a flame of brotherhood that time could not extinguish. And to have the opportunity to connect with soldiers from more recent conflicts, hear their stories, and honor their sacrifices—it meant the world to me.”
Larry

Hookin’ Veterans made this reunion possible, and for that, Gary, Larry, and Terry are eternally grateful. Their heartfelt words express the true essence of what we strive to accomplish through our efforts: building lasting connections, fostering camaraderie, and creating unforgettable experiences for those who have given so much.

Here’s to the bonds that stand the test of time, the friendships that never fade, and the eternal spirit of service that unites us all.

Sincerely,

Larry, Gary, and Terry
